Use formulas

Add up, look up, and work out numbers in a sheet with Excel-style formulas.

Formulas in Pitchcrow work like the ones in Excel. They start with =, and they update when the numbers they use change.

Write a formula

  1. Click a cell.

  2. Type = and then the formula, like =SUM(B2:B10) or =B4*(1+C2).

As you type a function name, a list of matching functions shows. Pick one to fill it in.

  3. To use another cell, click it while you type. Its address goes into the formula. Drag across cells to add a range, like B2:B10.

  4. Press Enter.

The cell shows the result. Click the cell to see the formula in the bar above the grid. You can edit it there too.

Use numbers from another tab

Put the tab name and ! before the cell address:

=Assumptions!C4
='Income Statement'!B12*0.25

If the tab name has a space in it, put single quotes around the name.

Copy a formula down or across

  1. Click the cell with the formula.
  2. Drag the small square at its bottom-right corner down or across.

The cell addresses shift for each row or column, just like in Excel. To keep an address fixed, add $, like $C$2.

Which functions work?

Most everyday Excel functions work. For example:

  • Math: SUM, AVERAGE, ROUND, SUMIFS, SUMPRODUCT
  • Logic: IF, IFERROR
  • Lookup: VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH
  • Finance: NPV, IRR, XNPV, XIRR, PMT
  • Dates: EOMONTH

If a formula shows an error

You seeIt usually means
#DIV/0!The formula divides by zero or by an empty cell.
#REF!The formula points at a cell that isn't there anymore.
#NAME?A function or tab name is misspelled.
#VALUE!The formula uses text where it needs a number.
#N/AA lookup couldn't find what it was looking for.
#CYCLE!The formula uses its own result, directly or through other cells. A note above the grid names the cells.

Quick totals without a formula

Select some cells with numbers. The bar along the bottom of the sheet, next to the tabs, shows their sum, average, and count.

Good to know

  • Formulas can use cells from any tab in the same sheet.
  • When you insert, delete, or move rows or columns, or rename a tab, formulas that point there update to match, like in Excel.
  • Copying cells from one Pitchcrow sheet to another keeps their formulas. When you paste from Excel, you get the results, not the formulas. See Use numbers from an Excel file.
  • Pitchcrow can write formulas for you, and checks its own formulas for errors. See Where to use Pitchcrow.
  • You need to be an Admin or Editor of the space to change a sheet. See Space roles.
